Like all superheroes, Kala has an origin story. (Do we assume too much about Kala's powers? Perhaps. …But perhaps not). Our story begins like so many others: Kala sleep began with a dream.
A dream…Of sleep.
Nick Segal is a successful young professional with a high-powered job and a social life and a family and friends and he reads and cooks and works out and travels and runs meetings and gives presentations and you know what? It all just takes a lot of energy, even the fun stuff. So he starts paying more attention to something he's always found fascinating: everything revolves around sleep. When he sleeps well, he breezes through the day. When he sleeps badly, nothing seems to go right. So how can he sleep better? How can people sleep better? He dives into research, and our story begins.
They put their heads together over the ultimate question: how can we create “high-performance sleep” – sleep that’s more restful, more effective, and more available to more people?
Nick partners with a top-tier design firm specializing in ergonomics, innovative tech, and generally reimagining the world in cool ways. They put their heads together over the ultimate question: how can we create “high-performance sleep” – sleep that’s more restful, more effective, and more available to more people? In the course of delving into this question, they discover the benefits of zero gravity sleep.
(High-powered work montage, set to something with an energetic backbeat. #ForInspiration) The team learns everything there is to know about zero gravity sleep, and then reimagines it from square one. They don't even start with a mattress. Their first design ideas are built out of crazy materials and look like something halfway between a coral reef and the Starship Enterprise. We see them plan, draft, build, lay down, wiggle around, get up, and then do it all over again. Again and again and again. Eventually they arrive at something that looks more like a bed we'd recognize as a bed, and then they send it out to an assortment of other people who lie down, wiggle around, sleep, report, sleep, and report. Changes are made. Testers are loving the results. Lather, rinse, repeat. The team is tired, but happy, because they're really onto something here. And then….
(The sun rises on the Kala mattress, and a star is born.)
(…Or maybe the sun sets and everyone goes to bed and sleeps the best sleep of their life. Either way. You get the idea.)
Of course, in reality, this is only the beginning of the Kala story. For the rest, our cast of characters grows…and includes you.
…To Be Continued.
